Florida DMV Fees Guide: Plates, Titles, & Weight Taxes
Florida is one of the fastest-growing states in the country, with thousands of residents moving and registering out-of-state vehicles every month. If you are registering a vehicle in Florida for the first time, DMV bills can be surprisingly high due to one-time initialization taxes.
The primary reason new Florida registration is expensive is the Initial Registration Fee of $225.00. This is a one-time tax assessed on any vehicle that has not been previously registered in the state of Florida. You only pay this fee once per vehicle, and if you trade in your car, you can transfer your license plate and avoid paying the $225 fee on your next purchase.
Florida also charges annual registration taxes based on vehicle weight. These weight classes are divided as follows:
- Net Weight under 2,499 lbs: Annual tax of $14.50.
- Net Weight 2,500 to 3,499 lbs: Annual tax of $22.50.
- Net Weight 3,500 lbs and over: Annual tax of $32.50.
If you are moving from another state, you must also obtain a Florida Title. The fee for a new Florida Title Certificate for an out-of-state vehicle is $85.25. If the vehicle is already titled in Florida and you are transferring ownership in-state, the fee is $75.25. Finally, if you need a new physical license plate (metal plate), Florida charges a flat $28.00 fee.
