How US Passport Fees Are Calculated & Paid
Applying for a US passport is essential for international travel, but the application process has specific billing rules. Unlike standard government transactions where you swipe a credit card for the final total, passport fees must be split into separate payments depending on the application type and submission method.
The Payment Split: Application vs. Execution Fees
First-time applicants and minors who must apply in person face two distinct fees:
- Application Fee: This funds the processing and printing of your passport document. It is paid directly to the Department of State. You must pay this fee using a personal check, cashier's check, or money order. Credit cards are not accepted for mail-in or post office acceptance submissions.
- Execution (Acceptance) Fee: This is a flat $35.00 fee paid to the acceptance facility (e.g., local post office, clerk of court, or public library) to verify your identity and witness your signature. This can be paid via credit card, cash, or check depending on the facility.
For standard renewals by mail (Form DS-82), you only pay the application fee ($130.00 for book). Sponsoring acceptance facility verification is not required for renewals.
